Many people have little understanding of the Yin Yang pendant symbol - it is a popular symbol worn by many young people. The Yin and Yang pendant shown here is made from red gold and yellow – it is about 25mm high.
Around two thousand years back throughout ancient China, the Yin Yang was created as a symbol of fundamental primordial opposites. This signifies the duality of all things. Man and woman, good and evil, light and dark, night and day, force and resistance, Heaven and Earth. It communicates the concept that without one, the other does not exist. Yin represents lightness and coolness. In the symbol of the Yin Yang, Yin is portrayed as the white element and represents passive power. Instances of Yin are Woman, rain, Earth, cold, resistance, reaction, repose, the moon, death, water, and positivity. Yin is observed in every part of life, in each species, in every location, in every one of all of us, as is Yang. Yin represents calmness and decline.
The force that defines Yin, that Yin is in perpetual, simultaneous conflict and harmony is Yang. Yang is represented by the black element and represents active energy. Man, the sun, fire, force, action, negativity, birth, and aggression are all represented. Even though Yin (Yang) is assigned to woman (man), that is not to say that all women (men) experience an large quantity of Yin (Yang) characteristics. Taoists think that through the merging of Yin (woman) and Yang (man) a synergy is created which results in new life (creation). The new life necessarily consists of parts of the two originals, and the “eyes” within the Yin Yang signify this. Though Yin is at opposition to Yang, she nevertheless includes a small component of him, and vice versa. The two can only harmoniously coexist when balance is actually achieved. When there is too much Yin, boredom, laziness, disarray, and disease will take place.
